Job Description

HS2's Green Corridor will run alongside the railway, creating a network of bigger, better-connected, climate resilient habitats and new green spaces for people to enjoy.

We, on behalf of HS2, have already started planting new woodlands and creating new ponds, grasslands and meadows, but the most challenging and exciting times are yet to come. Over the coming years, we will continue to create more habitats to sustain healthy populations of UK flora and fauna, providing a network of bigger, better-connected, climate resilient habitats and new green spaces for wildlife and people to enjoy.

Alongside this, we have ecological mitigation to implement and continue to enable construction, which will include species and habitats monitoring to drive adaptive management of ecological mitigation sites and features to ensure continued Favourable Conservation Status and the best outcomes for nature.

We are therefore looking for passionate and driven ecologists to further strengthen our Ecology Team and are particularly looking for:
Associate/Principal Level Ecologists
Senior Level Ecologists
Ecological Mitigation Specialists
Great Crested Newt Specialists
Bat Specialists
Badger Specialists
Botanists and habitat specialists
Ecological Data, GIS and Assurance Specialists
Ecological Survey Coordinators
Ecological Clerks of Works

Role purpose:

To perform a key role in driving the delivery of HS2's Green Corridor, assisting the Construction Ecology Lead and the Ecological Mitigation Delivery Team with:
Being the principal advisor to our Ecological Mitigation Delivery Team, particularly
with regard to:
o The project management and delivery of ecological works packages to enable
construction or mitigation activities (e.g. management of ecological mitigation sites,
GCN fencing).
o The production of the companys and Subcontractor deliverables and scopes of work.
o Ensuring the delivery of works in accordance with HS2 Technical Standards,
legislation, policy and best practice guidelines.
o The production of high quality ecological reports and deliverables.
o The implementation, monitoring and review of protected species mitigation.
o The delivery of habitat creation and enhancement measures, including adaptive
management based on the outcomes of monitoring data.
o Driving of initiatives for identification and safeguarding of retained habitats.

The following qualities/experience are essential:

Thorough understanding and experience of implementing ecological best practice,
standards and guidance
Strong project management experience and organisational skills
Excellent knowledge and experience of ecological management and mitigation for
major infrastructure projects
Educated to degree or Masters level in Ecological related subject
Excellent understanding of ecological legalisation for development and HS2
Full UK driver's licence and flexibility to travel
Protected species licence holder desirable to be a mitigation licence holder
Excellent understanding of the utilities/construction/engineering operating
environment
Literate in MS Office - Word, Excel, Outlook & GIS
Good interpersonal skills and experience of overseeing junior personnel
Excellent communication skills and a solution-driven attitude when hosting and
contributing to meetings
CIEEM Membership or equivalent
Experienced with communicating with Natural England on projects species licences
Skills in working collaboratively to obtain the best outcome for the project
Determination to see tasks through to completion with excellent planning
