HS2's Green Corridor will run alongside the railway, creating a network of bigger, better-connected, climate resilient habitats and new green spaces for people to enjoy.

On behalf of HS2, we have already started planting new woodlands and creating new ponds, grasslands and meadows, but the most challenging and exciting times are yet to come. Over the coming years, we will continue to create more habitats to sustain healthy populations of UK flora and fauna, providing a network of bigger, better-connected, climate resilient habitats and new green spaces for wildlife and people to enjoy.

Alongside this, we have ecological mitigation to implement and continue to enable construction, which will include species and habitats monitoring to drive adaptive management of ecological mitigation sites and features to ensure continued Favourable Conservation Status and the best outcomes for nature.

Role Purpose:

To perform the key role in driving the delivery of HS2's Green Corridor. This role will proactively seek to enhance habitats through the implement targeted adaptive management for the HS2 Ecological Mitigation Sites through bringing together the results of habitats and species monitoring, challenging Habitat Management Subcontractors, Technical Specialists, Commercial Teams, Project Managers and the our Design Team to ensure the best outcome for nature.

The person will be responsible for assisting the Construction Ecology Lead with:
The delivery of habitat creation and enhancement measures, including adaptive management based on the outcomes of monitoring data.
Driving of initiatives for identification and safeguarding of retained habitats.
Providing inspiration and technical guidance to the Ecology Team.
Ensuring the delivery of works in accordance with HS2 Technical Standards, legislation, policy and best practice guidelines.
The implementation, monitoring and review of protected species mitigation.
Technical assurance and Subcontractor deliverables and scopes of work.
The project management of ecological works packages to enable construction or mitigation activities. Mitigation sites, GCN fencing, pond/habitat creation, barn owl towers/boxes, new bat boxes (poles) recording.

The following qualities/experience are essential:

Extensive experience of habitat creation, enhancement and management.
Ability to be based in the Birmingham area for at least 3 days each week.
Strong project management experience and organisational skills
Thorough understanding and experience of implementing ecological best practice, standards and guidance
Knowledge and experience of ecological management and mitigation for major infrastructure projects
Educated to Degree or Masters level in Ecological related subject
Excellent understanding of ecological legalisation for development and HS2
Full UK driver's licence and flexibility to travel
Literate in MS Office - Word, Excel, Outlook & GIS
Good interpersonal skills and experience of managing multidisciplinary teams.
Excellent communication skills and a solution-driven attitude when hosting and contributing to meetings
CIEEM Membership or equivalent
Experienced with communicating with Natural England on projects species licences
Skills in working collaboratively to obtain the best outcome for the project
Determination to see tasks through to completion with excellent planning
